Wix, WordPress or a custom website? An honest way to decide
JEEVA ANANTH V · 7 OCTOBER 2026
People often ask me whether they should just use a website builder like Wix instead of paying someone. Sometimes my answer is yes, use the builder. It depends on what you want the site to do, and on how much of your own time you want to spend on it.
When a website builder is enough
If your site is mainly there so people can find you, a builder is a reasonable choice. Think of a small salon, a tuition centre or a consultant who needs five pages: what you do, prices, a few photos, a map and a contact form.
You can set it up over a weekend, change the text yourself and pay a monthly fee. The trade-off is that you are renting. You cannot take the site with you if you leave, and you can only do what the builder allows.
When WordPress makes sense
WordPress sits in the middle. It is free to use, there are thousands of themes and plugins, and many developers in Coimbatore know it well. If your business publishes a lot of content, like a blog, news or a big product catalogue, it is a sensible option.
The catch is upkeep. WordPress needs updates. Plugins go out of date, clash with each other, or get hacked if nobody is looking after them. A WordPress site that nobody maintains slowly gets worse. If you go this way, budget for someone to keep it updated.
When custom is worth it
A custom site is worth paying for when the site is part of how you do business, not just a brochure. Some signs:
- Customers order, book or pay through it.
- Your staff use it every day, through an admin panel or a dashboard.
- It needs to talk to your other systems: billing, stock, WhatsApp, a CRM.
- Speed and search ranking matter because most of your customers find you online.
- You have already outgrown a builder and keep hitting its limits.
You pay more at the start. In return the site does exactly what your business needs, it is fast, and you own all of it.
A simple test
Write down the three things you most want visitors to do on your site. If all three are "read about us", "see our work" and "call us", start with a builder. If one of them is "order", "book", "log in" or "pay", talk to a developer before you pick anything.
If you are not sure
That is a normal place to be. Our first conversation is a free technical review, and sometimes the honest outcome is "use Wix for now and come back when you need more". Book one here, or see what we build on our website development page.
